With the recent release of CODE VEIN, gamers have been hacking and slashing through an open world, JRPG, hack-and-slash, action adventure, RPG. While many have considered this the Dark Souls of anime games, do gamers really need this?

With Nioh, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the upcoming Nioh 2, gamers already have tons of choices when it comes to Dark Souls style combat. While the combat system is indeed fun, Dark Souls has many glaring issues that other games seem hesitant to fix. You can’t pause the game in the middle of combat, enemies keep respawning after you kill them, you can only save in certain spots, and there still isn’t an easy mode. The gaming industry needs a shake up by other games that actually fix these glaring issues untouched by lazy developers. The gaming industry needs another game like Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime.

Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime describes itself as “The kawaii themed puzzler” (kawaii means cute for you gaijins) and was released in 2015. This classic title boasts impressive sales numbers and even has an active speed running community. But how exactly does it compare against the likes of Dark Souls and how will it shake up the gaming industry?

Compared to Dark Souls’ tiny selection of 22 different locations, Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime has an outstanding 26 unique puzzles of varying difficulties perfect for any gamers. It also has some helpful hints for those struggling with the game’s intricate mechanics, something Dark Souls sorely lacks. Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime is also a much longer game. I have already spent 7 hours in the game and I have only completed 3 puzzles. If only it was longer.

Maybe one day, we will get another Pixel Puzzles 2: Anime. It’s unknown if Pixel Puzzles 3: Anime is in the works, but we can only hope that another game of that caliber will show its face and show Dark Souls how it’s done.
